This is Michelle ~ She is an artist.

7339mbwThis is her biography~

“I remember wandering everywhere as a child with pencils, crayons and paper.”

It came as no surprise that art was her primary source of expression considering that Michelle Brown was born with a rare throat disorder and was unable to communicate verbally the first five years.

Born and raised in Abbotsford, British Columbia, Michelle’s parents encouraged her early creative inclinations through ballet, piano and art lessons. She flourished in fine arts and received a Bachelor of Arts at Trinity Western University in 1992, with an art concentration, history and education minor, accounting and fitness certifications. It was often said that her style, subjects and mediums were as varied as her extracurricular interests.

In 2000 Michelle accepted a job with TELUS in Burnaby, B.C., which led to a position as an entertainment website producer and instigated taking web publishing and graphics courses at B.C.I.T. As a result of her zeal for adventure sports, she also explored the world of travel writing under the tutelage of well-known Vancouver movie critic and travel writer, John. T.D. Keyes. Her works were published on MyBC.com, Alberta.com, and myTO.com. During this time Michelle was involved with various art groups and projects in the Fraser Valley and accepted into the Federation of Canadian Artists

Leaving TELUS the fall of 2002, Michelle accepted a finance position with the Abbotsford Police Department while continuing involvements in the local art community. Resuming accounting studies in 2010, the demands of school and her job temporarily took her focus away from art

Desiring more time for family and her passion for painting, Michelle decided to move to the quiet recreation area of 108 Mile Ranch, B.C., in March of 2013. She has been painting primarily landscapes and flowers inspired by her travels around British Columbia and her backyard in the Southern Cariboo. She exhibits her work locally, the Okanagan, and Vancouver.

Michelle Brown ~ The Artist’s Statement~

I have been involved in painting and drawing as long as I can remember. It has been a favourite form of expression since early childhood. I was introduced to oils around the age of 10 through private lessons and continued with oils until I began experimenting with acrylics in university. Due to its ease of use, I have worked in acrylic ever since.

I have often asked myself why I paint. I grapple for an answer and find it difficult other than it is simply an inner compulsion to recreate whatever is inspiring at the moment. In university it was the intricacies of the human form, particularly the athletic form and how to express it using dynamic colour. The last few years I have moved toward trying to depict the beauty and many unusual aspects of flowers and landscapes, inspired by travel around the province of B.C., Canada. It is a truly amazing and diverse place that beckons exploration.

In addition to the awesome beauty around me, I have been inspired by studying the Great Masters such as Michelangelo and Da Vinci and their mastery of techniques combined with mathematical precision. Since university, I have also been a fan of Georgia O’Keefe and her unusual perspective on flowers – zooming in to display their details and utilizing flowing organic lines. Over the last number of years I have been impacted – like almost every other Canadian landscape artist – by the Group of Seven and their passion for creating the Canadian landscape utilizing colour and brush stroke.

My work reflects the contradiction of my personality: the emergence of tradition with interest in modern style and colour, an eye for detail with a desire for simplicity, the interplay of the left and right side of the brain. I hope to someday find that place that perfectly melds the mathematical and orderly side with the truly freeing creative process in a way does justice to the beauty of creation.
