Saint Valentine’s Day<\/strong>, commonly shortened to Valentine’s Day<\/strong>,is an annual commemoration held on February 14 celebrating love<\/a> and affection<\/a> between intimate companions<\/a>. The day is named after one or more early Christian martyrs<\/a>, Saint Valentine<\/a>, and was established by Pope Gelasius I<\/a> in 496 AD. It was deleted<\/a> from the Roman calendar of saints in 1969 by Pope Paul VI<\/a>, but its religious observance is still permitted. It is traditionally a day on which lovers express their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery<\/a>, and sending greeting cards<\/a> (known as “valentines<\/em>“). The day first became associated with romantic love<\/a> in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer<\/a> in the High Middle Ages<\/a>, when the tradition of courtly love<\/a> flourished.<\/p>\n
