It is a\u00c2\u00a0<a title=\"Red Ensign\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Red_Ensign\">British Red Ensign<\/a>, featuring the\u00c2\u00a0<a title=\"Union Flag\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Union_Flag\">Union Flag<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0in the\u00c2\u00a0<a title=\"Canton (flag)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Canton_(flag)\">canton<\/a>,\u00c2\u00a0<a title=\"Defacement (flag)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Defacement_(flag)\">defaced<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0with the shield of the\u00c2\u00a0<a title=\"Coat of Arms of Canada\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Coat_of_Arms_of_Canada\">Coat of Arms of Canada<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1632\" title=\"flagnow\" src=\"http:\/\/www.aprilrobertsportraits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/flagnow.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"890\" height=\"591\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.aprilrobertsportraits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/flagnow.jpg 890w, http:\/\/www.aprilrobertsportraits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/flagnow-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.aprilrobertsportraits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/flagnow-451x300.jpg 451w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 890px) 100vw, 890px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The\u00c2\u00a0<strong>National Flag of Canada<\/strong>,\u00c2\u00a0also known as the\u00c2\u00a0<strong>Maple Leaf<\/strong>, and\u00c2\u00a0<em><strong>l&#8217;Unifoli\u00c3\u00a9<\/strong><\/em>\u00c2\u00a0(<a title=\"French language\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/French_language\">French<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0for &#8220;the one-leafed&#8221;), is a red\u00c2\u00a0<a title=\"Flag\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Flag\">flag<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0with a white square in its centre, featuring a stylized 11-pointed red\u00c2\u00a0<a title=\"Maple leaf\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maple_leaf\">maple leaf<\/a>. Its adoption in 1965 marked the first time a national flag had been officially adopted in\u00c2\u00a0<a title=\"Canada\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Canada\">Canada<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0to replace the\u00c2\u00a0<a title=\"Union Flag\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Union_Flag\">Union Flag<\/a>. The\u00c2\u00a0<a title=\"Canadian Red Ensign\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Canadian_Red_Ensign\">Canadian Red Ensign<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0had been unofficially used since the 1890s and was approved by a 1945\u00c2\u00a0<a title=\"Order in Council\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Order_in_Council\">Order in Council<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0for use &#8220;wherever place or occasion may make it desirable to fly a distinctive Canadian flag&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>In 1964, Prime Minister\u00c2\u00a0<a title=\"Lester B. Pearson\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lester_B._Pearson\">Lester B. Pearson<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0appointed a committee to resolve the issue, sparking a serious\u00c2\u00a0<a title=\"Great Canadian Flag Debate\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Great_Canadian_Flag_Debate\">debate about a flag change<\/a>. Out of three choices, the maple leaf design by\u00c2\u00a0<a title=\"George Stanley\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_Stanley\">George F. G. Stanley<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0and\u00c2\u00a0<a title=\"John Matheson\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Matheson\">John Matheson<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0based on the flag of the\u00c2\u00a0<a title=\"Royal Military College of Canada\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Royal_Military_College_of_Canada\">Royal Military College of Canada<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0was selected. The flag made its first appearance on February 15, 1965; the date is now celebrated annually as\u00c2\u00a0<a title=\"National Flag of Canada Day\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Flag_of_Canada_Day\">National Flag of Canada Day<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Many different flags have been created for use by Canadian officials, government bodies, and military forces. Most of these flags contain the maple leaf motif in some fashion, either by having the Canadian flag charged in the canton, or by including maple leaves in the design. The\u00c2\u00a0<a title=\"Union Flag\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Union_Flag\">Royal Union Flag<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0is also an official flag in\u00c2\u00a0<a title=\"Canada\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Canada\">Canada<\/a>, used as a symbol of Canada&#8217;s membership in the\u00c2\u00a0<a title=\"Commonwealth of Nations\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Commonwealth_of_Nations\">Commonwealth of Nations<\/a>, and of its allegiance to\u00c2\u00a0<a title=\"Monarchy of Canada\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Monarchy_of_Canada\">the Crown<\/a>. Canada Day observances take place throughout Canada as well as by Canadians internationally.<\/p>\n<p>I liked our original Red Ensign flag. \u00c2\u00a0But I must say I am really fond of our Maple Leaf flag.<\/p>\n<p>I hope everyone had a great Canada Day !
