The\u00c2\u00a0Canadian Red Ensign<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0is the former flag of\u00c2\u00a0Canada<\/a>, used by the federal government though it was never adopted as official by the\u00c2\u00a0Parliament of Canada<\/a>. It is a\u00c2\u00a0British Red Ensign<\/a>, featuring the\u00c2\u00a0Union Flag<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0in the\u00c2\u00a0canton<\/a>,\u00c2\u00a0defaced<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0with the shield of the\u00c2\u00a0Coat of Arms of Canada<\/a>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The\u00c2\u00a0National Flag of Canada<\/strong>,\u00c2\u00a0also known as the\u00c2\u00a0Maple Leaf<\/strong>, and\u00c2\u00a0l’Unifoli\u00c3\u00a9<\/strong><\/em>\u00c2\u00a0(French<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0for “the one-leafed”), is a red\u00c2\u00a0flag<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0with a white square in its centre, featuring a stylized 11-pointed red\u00c2\u00a0maple leaf<\/a>. Its adoption in 1965 marked the first time a national flag had been officially adopted in\u00c2\u00a0Canada<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0to replace the\u00c2\u00a0Union Flag<\/a>. The\u00c2\u00a0Canadian Red Ensign<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0had been unofficially used since the 1890s and was approved by a 1945\u00c2\u00a0Order in Council<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0for use “wherever place or occasion may make it desirable to fly a distinctive Canadian flag”.<\/p>\n In 1964, Prime Minister\u00c2\u00a0Lester B. Pearson<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0appointed a committee to resolve the issue, sparking a serious\u00c2\u00a0debate about a flag change<\/a>. Out of three choices, the maple leaf design by\u00c2\u00a0George F. G. Stanley<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0and\u00c2\u00a0John Matheson<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0based on the flag of the\u00c2\u00a0Royal Military College of Canada<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0was selected. The flag made its first appearance on February 15, 1965; the date is now celebrated annually as\u00c2\u00a0National Flag of Canada Day<\/a>.<\/p>\n Many different flags have been created for use by Canadian officials, government bodies, and military forces. Most of these flags contain the maple leaf motif in some fashion, either by having the Canadian flag charged in the canton, or by including maple leaves in the design. The\u00c2\u00a0Royal Union Flag<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0is also an official flag in\u00c2\u00a0Canada<\/a>, used as a symbol of Canada’s membership in the\u00c2\u00a0Commonwealth of Nations<\/a>, and of its allegiance to\u00c2\u00a0the Crown<\/a>.
